The recount of votes in Rotterdam's local election is complete and has confirmed the Labour Party as the biggest winner. Its lead over local party, Liveable Rotterdam, was actually increased after the recount. Labour can now get down to forming a local government coalition.
The recount started at 7:30 am on Thursday and ended in the early hours of Friday, with over 221,000 ballots being checked and counted.
A Rotterdam Council committee ordered the recount after advice from Mayor Ahmed Aboutaleb. Initially, he resisted the idea but, over the last week, an increasing number of irregularities in the poll came to light. These included reports of multiple voting and instances of more than one person being in polling booths.
An investigation is also underway into allegations that the local party, Liveable Rotterdam, broke the rules by soliciting proxy ballots from voters.
