Läufer calls for invitation to 4 May service

Published on 20 December 2009 - 10:53pm
More about:

The German ambassador to the Netherlands, Thomas Läufer, says he wants to attend the national remembrance service at Amsterdam's Dam Square on 4 May.

Mr Läufer made his comments on the final episode of the Dutch television series The War. According to Mr Läufer, relations between Germany and the Netherlands have improved considerably and there is no longer any impediment to inviting him to attend the ceremony.

He has attended other World War II remembrance services and says there have been very few negative comments. Mr Läufer said, " if we really want to complete the reconciliation process, then the German ambassador to the Netherlands should attend the national remembrance service".
