Kyrgyzstan’s interim government has given ousted president Kurmanbek Bakiyev until the end of Tuesday to give himself up. If he fails to surrender before the ultimatum expires, he will be arrested.
The new rulers of Kyrgyzstan have announced that the former president no longer has immunity from prosecution. He is now the subject of a criminal investigation.
Mr Bakiyev fled to the southern city of Jalalabad following last week’s anti-government protests in which at least 80 people were killed. Roza Otunbayeva, the former leader of the opposition who has assumed power, says the ousted president should be brought to justice for the deaths of the demonstrators.
Mr Bakiyev addressed supporters in Jalalabad on Monday. He repeated his refusal to give up office voluntarily, describing the interim government as gangsters.
