Kim Clijsters wins US Open

Published on 14 September 2009 - 11:13am
More about:

Belgian tennis player Kim Clijsters has won the US Open.

In the final, Ms Clijsters dealt with Danish player Caroline Wozniacki in two sets, 7-5 and 6-3. The Belgian player's victory at the US Open is the crown on an unexpected return to the world of international tennis.

She stopped playing two years ago, became a mother, and announced in March she would make a comeback. Ms Clijsters, who earlier won the US Open in 2005, beat both Williams sisters on her way to the final.

The men's final is between the Swiss Roger Federer and the Argentinian Juan Martin del Potro. In the semi finals, Mr Del Potro easily beat Spaniard Rafael Nadal in three sets, 6-2, 6-2, 6-2. Roger Federer only needed three sets against Serbian Novak Djokovic as well, 7-6, 7-5, 7-5.
