Kenyan witnesses of poll violence threatened

Published on 6 January 2010 - 6:54pm
More about:

Kenyans who witnessed the violence around the 2007 election are reported to have been attacked and to have received death threats.

One witness who gave evidence to the Waki Commission into the election fighting has told the BBC that he has had text message death threats. Other reports say witnesses have been beaten up and told to recant their evidence to the commission.

About 1300 people were killed in the wave of violence which hit Kenya from December 2007 to February 2008. A further 300,000 were forced to flee their homes.

The International Criminal Court in The Hague has undertaken to prosecute those behind the fighting, but has yet to name the suspects.
