The government of Afghanistan has for the first time ever agreed a ceasefire with the Taliban. It will cover the province of Badghis and the border with Turkmenistan.
A government spokesman says the Taliban have promise not to disrupt the presidential elections in August. In return the Afghan government will leave the Taliban alone and they will be allowed to take part in the elections.
The government hopes ceasefires can be arranged in other provinces so that the elections can take place safely.
