Joran van der Sloot: a treat for psychiatrists

Published on : 3 June 2010 - 9:13pm | By Thijs Papôt (Photo: ANP)
More about:

A mentally unstable boy with a sociopathic personality disorder, and a proclivity for gambling and drugs. A treat for psychiatrists and a source of inspiration for those inclined to speculate on the true circumstances of a mysterious disappearance.

This is the impression Joran van der Sloot has created in the media ever since he became the chief suspect in the disappearance of Natalee Holloway, the US teenager who vanished while on holiday on the Caribbean island of Aruba five years ago.

Since then, his alleged involvement in the 2005 disappearance and his subsequent contradictory statements and appearances in the media have generated enormous media attention. This week, he is once again the main suspect in the killing of a young woman.

Study
Joran van der Sloot, who was born in 1987 and grew up on Aruba as the son of Dutch expatriates, was initially suspected of killing Ms Holloway. However, he was released after three months because of a lack of evidence. He then moved to the Netherlands, by his own account to study at the Arnhem school for higher vocational education.

However, he remained at the centre of media attention, in part because of his own actions. He published a book: The Natalee Holloway Case; My Own Story about her Disappearance on Aruba. In it, he described himself as a ‘pathological liar', who already needed psychiatric help at a very young age.

Confession
In early 2008, Mr Van Der Sloot again made headlines due to sensational footage broadcast in a television show by crime reporter Peter R de Vries. In a conversation with an associate of Mr De Vries - filmed in a car by a hidden camera - Joran confessed to being involved in Natalee Holloway's disappearance. “She was drunk, Patrick, but I thought, I’ll take her with me and f… her. We did it on the beach, but she suddenly started shaking. And then, nothing.” These were the words of an apparently detached Mr Van Der Sloot.

He said he then put her body in a boat and dumped her overboard out at sea. However, he later denied everything. Although TV sleuth Mr De Vries won an Emmy Award for his 'revelation', an Aruban judge said the statements made by Mr Van Der Sloot did not provide sufficient evidence to have him re-arrested. Put under pressure by a new police investigation, Mr Van Der Sloot agreed to voluntarily check into a psychiatric clinic, but ended up travelling to Thailand.

Heartless
Several psychiatrists say admission to a clinic would not have been a luxury. Justice ministry official Erik Gerretsen said: “I would really like to read a psychiatric evaluation of that boy. Because everything is a mystery. The lying, for instance. It points to Joran living in a number of different realities”.

Mr Van der Sloot reportedly suffers from a ‘sociopathic personality disorder’, which typically includes reckless and impulsive behaviour and a lack of empathy. Psychiatrist Bram Bakker says the fact that he tried to capitalise on the affair by publishing a book about it, and wanted to submit a claim for damages to the Public Prosecutors’ Office, points to ‘heartlessness’.

Trafficking in women
New revelations about Mr Van der Sloot followed in November 2008. An undercover operation allegedly showed his involvement in trafficking in women in Thailand. Video footage showed him accepting 1000 euros and later confirming the transaction by telephone.

His re-appearance in the limelight as the main suspect in the murder of young Peruvian Stephany Flores will undoubtedly shed new light on the Holloway case.

the so called "good" journalist and placed this also in here ;)
.
interview www.depers.nl with p.r.de vries.
.
sunday, p.r.de vries hit again: joran van de sloot would proceed in thai women.
de vries' liquidated friend and heineken kidnapper Cor van Hout, was also associated with women trafficking.
.
pers.nl: peter r., what do you think about women trafficking?
.
peter: everyone is against it. it seems to me, is not something to support.
.
pers.nl: the prosecution has strong evidence that window prostitution in Alkmaar, formerly is owned by your liquidated friend cor van hout.
and also strong evidence women trafficking!
.
peter: thats far from certain. you would have to ask him.
.
pers.nl: thats not possible anymore. but were Van Hout's contacts with the criminal circuit hard in your friendship?
.
peter: the fact that i was friends with him, does not mean i approvingly everything he did. i also didnt approved the kidnapping of Freddy Heineken,
and the fact that Cor drank a lot.
.
pers.nl: you spoke to him ever?
.
peter: iam not going to take all the measures. sometimes people are just interesting the things they do.
i became friends with him when i was working on a book about him. it was not a friendship in which everything was discussed.
.
pers.nl: with joran van der sloot you call the measure.
.
peter: joran is no friend of mine.
.
final words of pers.nl:
the latter seems a real telling response.
evidently a single suspect its worth to show widely on TV if you're no friend of Peter and not if you are a friend of Peter.
apparently women trafficking is not so bad if you're a friend of Peter.

that confession was far from a good confession.
two junckies intoxicated of weed and cocaine in a car for at least 5 months.
drugs delivered by the journalist...
anyway... cutten here and cutten there till they had a great show for television.
it is not realy wrong saying... it was a underaged completely messed up "undercover action"!
.
this started already when joran was 17 years old.
he was never judged by court for murder at NH and never proved also.
they had to leave him alone but instead of this... that dutch media television journalist accused joran of killed NH.
.
they used media television... one of the most dangerious weapen in the world against a 17 years old child! *shakes head*

M 22 June 2010 - 3:57am / USA

After hearing what his Mother said, the woman who gave birth to him I am beginning to see how a very intelligent , outgoing young man wound up a murderer in Peru.. She says 'I can not cry for him like I did Paul', "I can not visit him and embrace him in jail", "I wash my hands of him!!!" "I hope he gets help in prison??""" Excuse me??? A Mom never gives up on their child no matter how they turn out. Now, when he has no one she is literally announcing to the world that she is abandoning him, throwing him away because she can't deal. He is her and Pauls seed, they brought him up. She is calling him 'Sick in the head' admitting he's needed help for years. This woman is without compassion and has no heart and perhaps no soul. Perhaps that is how he grew up, no role models to learn the value of each individuals life and the need for compassion for all. I am not negating the crime he has just committed in Peru or whatever happened in Aruba.. but I am beginning to understand where and how he started on his downward spiral.
I've been to Aruba several times and was in fact there that June for 10 days at The Marriott Stellaris.. It's a wonderful Island with wonderful people who went all out searching for Natalee not knowing where to begin as others were falsely accused. The Dutch are wonderful people.. There is goodness in people in every nation.. Every Country has murderer's . Goodness, here in The USA we have Mothers murdering their own children and then partying for a month.. we have husbands who murder their pregnant wife and dump them in the water or murder their wives and are never seen again... A man in Mass. just murdered his wife, his MIL, his 4 yr old son and 2year old daughter in her crib.. leaving notes saying he had done it.
This did not happen to Joran because he's Dutch... what a stupid conclusion for anyone to come to.. Murder is murder, it has nothing to do with where one is from or who they were or were not.
It's just so sad that so many have suffered due to Joran and even sadder that had his PARENTS CARED, this may have never happened, none of it.. had they gotten him the help he needed years ago.
His Mom hopes he gets help??? In that hell hole of a prison where the bathroom is a hole in the floor where rats crawl out of at night. that is not humane treatment... even G-d wouldn't treat the worse offender, sinner like that.
Joran needs help and he'll never get it there. His parents lost him long ago and apparently never cared. I hope his two younger brothers are removed from this womans care by DSS so they might have a chance to be nourished properly with love and emotion by a woman or man with a heart!!! This is so tragic on so very many levels. So, so sad!! :( M. Ct. USA.

Last comment: I'm not from Holland. A good ole American boy.

Anonymous 18 June 2010 - 10:39am

I have great sadness for the victims. I also feel great sadness for Joran. It's like his life is over when their might have been possibility - had he got help. He doesn't appear like a psychopath, and I see plenty of politicians who are a lot more evil (Dick Cheney and Sarah Palin oil mongers and war crimes violators, who also lie lie lie).

What he did to the Flores girl was horrible. No excuse. However, to paint her as "dimunitive" is a bit of a joke. She was a big big strong girl who appeared to be independent but unfortunately gullible when it came to Joran.

Either way. It's sad.

Nice to see the American Libtards were able to find this site ok. Most can't find there butts with a GPS!

Friend of Mary S. 26 June 2010 - 7:08am

Marie is this you? Are you trying to be sarcastic like Mary S? You're better than that. I like your serious comments. You can see more "marysmarys" postings on other sites discussing Joran. She told me she just posted on the CBS site and she did on June 25. I asked her how many sites she is posting on and she said about 12 but not always using "Mary S" or "marysmarys." She said she spends 6 or so hours a day on Joran stuff and another 4 hours on Casey Anthony and Drew Peterson but that she is having the most fun with RNW because it reaches the Dutch and Arubans first. She is still slightly "Pis**d" at me for revealing her duplicitous agenda but still likes to brag to me. It's amazing how many are still getting riled up by her sarcasm and silly wit. P.S. Keep posting but be your sincere Marie self.

Marie 28 June 2010 - 9:30pm / USA

Yes, I know I can post better than this. Thanks for calling me on it. I'm not sure, however, if you are aware of the large, rabid divide in this country between the right and the left. If you are not aware, it is just too long and ugly of a story to get into. I do hope Mary S. keeps posting. She just makes my day!!!

Herb 15 June 2010 - 12:30pm / Kenya

Fantastic!!!! Many well balanced and intelligent responses here. The majority coming from the US....

Before Anonymous is starting on "the shittiest nation of the world"... let me remind you: Abu Graib?? Vietnam?? Somalia??? Iraq?? Afghanistan?? Please look in the mirror. You've a great number of psycho's yourself.

I'm not defending this guy, it's good that he's caught and I hope he gets life imprisonment. But you: get a life before you start about a country in general. No wonder the US is the target of so many ideologies. Reading the responses you almost start thinking they're right. Luckily I know better.

Sonialyna 14 June 2010 - 2:46pm / USA

Jooran is Dutch scum. What a nerve to defend a filthy woman-killer and rapist! Who cares if he does not get a "fair trial"!!! Did Natalee and Flores get a "fair chance"? Stop defending this bastard, people from Holland! Be the first to admit Aruba screwed up big time when investigating Natalee's death because Paulus slipped a few dollars (or whatever) into the right hands. Shame on his mother who gave birth to such a monster and defended him, knowing he was guilty!

Anonymous 12 June 2010 - 9:19pm / Netherlands

This seems to be a debate about Holland versus U.S.A. It is not. The Dutch people are not in favor of Joran, and wish that he be punished duely for his actions. Joran is clearly a psychopath and ironically has met his match in Peru. Justice has prevailed. Unfortunately, this last murder could have been prevailed, if the investigations in Aruba were conducted in an orderly fashion. However, corruption occurs all around the world. Let's stop the country bashing and concentrate on the real issue. The process of closure and acceptance for the families involved ( Natalie's and Stephany's families ).

Anonymous 12 June 2010 - 8:24am / USA

It's about time this little shi* got caught. He and his Mommy are doing all they can to get him back to Aruba where the officials have all been paid handsomely to keep him safe and out of harm's way. Urine Vanderslut screwed up big time this time around. Peruvian prison is not going to be a walk in the park ~ They don't have the death penalty in Peru for a reason and Vanderslut is about to meet Bubba and the boys. I give him less than a week before they kill his sorry a$$. Justice will be served for this slimeball.

m chappuis 11 June 2010 - 3:25pm / USA

CJ, You're incredibly ignorant. And hateful. And, reading your posts isn't worth my time.

m chappuis 11 June 2010 - 3:18pm / USA

Don't laugh at the implication that sociopathy is genetically linked. Those are genes that I don't want passed on to anyone..

Katia 9 June 2010 - 9:58pm / Canada

I feel sorry for Joran Van Der Sloot and his family. He might became a sociopath because the society did not recognize his need for psychiatric help and psycological treatment. Yes, he can be treated and become a better person.

Anonymous 12 June 2010 - 11:15am / USA

Katia- I just earned a whole new respect for Canada after watching the Military Channel and a special on D-Day. Those Canadian (along with our Americans and the British) boys lost their lives to defeat evil. Why do you defend it? It's evil and should be treated as such. Give us a break with your "I'm such a caring person" crap, two innocent young women died at Van Der Sloots hands, end of story. Please spare us by feeling sorry for him, by all accounts, he squeezed the life out of one and probably the other. Good Lord, you feel sorry for him? Do you think it takes an instant to kill someone by choking them to death? We cannot imagine the terror and excruciating pain....You are ignorant and misguided...

Anonymous 12 June 2010 - 11:03am / USA

Is that Dr. Katia? Or another liberal "I'm sure it will be fine, I just feel it" statement. Do you want to be that innocent young woman to test his becoming a better person after he is "treated"? Perhaps you have a young daughter that you could hook up with him just as soon as the experts state that he has completed his treatment. Just how do you make a narcissitic egomaniac care about another person- after they have already proven themselves by killing two innocent young women? You are a fool.

Anonymous 12 June 2010 - 8:28am / USA

He may be able to be treated with meds, true. But he loves the killer he is so why would he take meds and who is going to see to it that he takes them? In his eyes he is God and these girls deserved what they got. So, you feel sorry for him? What do you feel for the victims of this sociopathic idiot?

Brandi 9 June 2010 - 6:42pm / USA

Limey - where did you get all this knowledge? Psychopath's stop at the age of 50? I never knew that. Is there a change in their brain chemistry at 50? As far as Joran goes, it's becoming depressing reading about him because of who he is, a horrible person with no respect for human life. I do believe there had to be signs of a personality disorder years ago but nothing is being said about him. Where are all the people that knew him, such as teachers, schoolmates, neighbors? You just don't turn into a Psychopath overnight. They say people like him start off by killing animals and graduate to people. He had to be doing something the first 17 years of his life to indicate mental illness. As far as his confession goes, I don't believe a word he says. He went out for coffee and came back...where is the footage of him coming back to his room with the coffee he bought for both Stephany and himself? I hope the Police in Peru don't fall into a trap and believe him. He lies and lies about everything. Now his mother is in Peru and it will give him some energy to come up with stories. I think he told the story about Natalie to divert attention away from Stephany's murder and he wants to try and get out of Peru and into the U.S. so he doesn't have to go to jail. He would rather be in a jail here. Plus, the U.S. has probably has a treaty with the Netherlands which would allow him to do his time in a jail in the Netherlands. Peru has no such treaty. Psychopaths are very intelligent and are always a step ahead of everyone else. There is a method to his madness and he confessed a story but maybe not the true story. There is no proof Stephany was looking thru his computer. Maybe he just beat her to death in a rage because she pissed him off. He was probably on his way to the place in South American that is Dutch, where the two brothers that were implicated along with him are from because he would have been safe there since they wouldn't have sent him back to Peru. But he got caught by the good Police work of Peru. Thank Peru for getting this man off the streets and avoiding another murder of a young woman. RIP Stephany.

You only have to push the button once, Brandi. ;-)

gig is up 9 June 2010 - 5:58pm / canada

During the Holloway investigation, Aruba made an ass out of itself with the whole world watching. Joran Van Der Sloot is not a treat for psychiatrists anymore. He is a living example of a child murderer allowed to go free, and kill some more. Both of his parents, or perhaps one of his parents, would have had to pass this gene to their child. Perhaps this is why both parents were both so convinced that covering up for their monster was a better route to take then having the corage, and the human decency to do the right thing. I hope the witch doctors of Peru conjure darkly.

m chappuis 11 June 2010 - 3:12pm / USA

He's also got NPD. I agree about his parents. They're covering for their little monster.
He didn't have to beat her. He strangled her, and broke her neck/spine. The bruises are a result of his capacity for physical cruelty. He's a cold, hard killer.
Jeffery Dahmer's mother was in denial, too. His father admitted that Jeff had killed animals, as a child. He told the mother, "You are in complete denial."

Anonymous 9 June 2010 - 8:02pm / USA

To "Gig is up"... You would benefit greatly from reading up on "Anti-Social Personality Disorder" and/or Sociopath behavior. I comment because yours is first here and it's full of ignorant statements that some may believe. There is NO GENE for Sociopaths and it's not hereditary. True that one or both of his parents could have the same disorder, but it's not an absolute. For that matter, I think there are a lot of Psychiatrists, Therapists, Criminologists... and mostly, Legal Systems worldwide that should "bone up" on this disorder so that they can recognize it and sentence offenders more appropriately. It is not a disorder that can be cured with therapy or with meds. They should lock this guy up (and any other criminal with this disorder) for life. He is a danger to any society as a murderer and other anti-human activities.

Anonymous 9 June 2010 - 6:11pm

There's a "child murderer gene"??????
And what's up with the "witch doctors of Peru" comment? Do you not get out much??????

Anonymous 9 June 2010 - 5:02pm / USA

I,m glad they finally caught him it,s too bad we had to lose another sweet girl to catch him he should be put in prison where there are people that will show him no mercy and torture him till he can,t take it anymore and then maybe he will show some remorse for what he has done. And as for his attorney Tacopina he should be made to suffer like the Family,s of those 2 girls he is nothing but scum, how can you defend a murderer like this and sleep at night. I guess as long as the money is there and the notoriety you can do anything and live with yourself.
