Australian volcano expert Mark Tingagy says that the mud volcano on the Indonesian island of Java may continue to erupt for another 30 years.
His report comes after a visit to the site of the first eruption in 2006 in the east of Java. That eruption claimed 13 lives and eradicated 12 villages. More than 42,000 people were forced to leave their homes.
The Australian geologist says that the area around the volcano is sinking at a daily rate of two to five centimetres. The hot mud threatens the lives of approximately 100,000 people.
Since 2006, the volcano has been releasing approximately 50,000 cubic metres of mud every day. That is enough to fill 50 Olympic-sized swimming pools daily.
