Islam under fire in Texas army shooting

As the US army deals with the aftermath of a fatal shooting at one of its bases, a controversial American scholar has told Radio Netherlands the White House should vet all Muslims who want to enlist. Major Nidal Malik Hasan killed 13 people and left another 30 injured – it’s believed he was unhappy about the prospect of being sent to Iraq.

The incident at Fort Hood – one of the largest bases in the US - was the latest in a number attacks carried out by American soldiers on their own people. In July this year, a Fort Hood soldier was charged with murdering a fellow serviceman after returning from Iraq. And in 2005 another US soldier was sentenced to death for a grenade attack in Kuwait, on the eve of the Iraq war, that left two other soldiers dead.

Bigger problem

Although only the second of these attacks was carried out by a Muslim soldier, Daniel Pipes – an academic on radical Islam – says this is a bigger problem than the US wants to admit. He argues all Muslims entering the police or army should be thoroughly investigated.

“Assuming this soldier Hasan was angry at the war, it’s not terribly surprising. There are tensions. Unfortunately, I think there’s a pattern when there are Muslims who engage in violent acts, to interpret this as something other than Jihad. And I think that’s a mistake. In general that’s the motive – it’s anger against non-Muslims.”

Listen to an interview with Daniel Pipes

Video footage taken just before the Fort Base massacre reveals Maj Hasan was wearing what appears to be a traditional Arab robe and a skull cap. The shop owner where he bought his breakfast every day says the army psychiatrist was worried about being sent to Iraq and the prospect of fighting other Muslims.

Isolated incident

But while much is being made in the media of Maj Hasan’s faith, Muslims in the US stress this was an isolated incident. Robert Salaam was in the US marines for six years and converted to Islam shortly after 11 September, 2001. He agrees this was an isolated incident carried out by a possible extremist.

“It’s surprising because statistically it’s very rare for troops in general to turn on their fellow comrades, especially in this case, and outside of the Hasan Akbar incident [in Kuwait], there really isn’t much of this thing with Muslim-soldiers turning on fellow comrades. It tends to be rare…. It’s extremely shocking whether it’s a Muslim or not.”

Ethical dilemma

Robert Salaam admits Muslims in the armed forces face an ethical dilemma and there is not enough recognition in the US of the important role they play. But he argues those who enlist must realise they might be sent to combat, and could be posted to Afghanistan or Iraq.

“I would say if you’re a Muslim considering going into the military and you have issues with these wars, then you shouldn’t go.”

Investigation ongoing
Investigators in Texas are still trying to piece together Thursday’s events and in particular, what prompted an experienced soldier – just two ranks away from becoming General - to embark on a killing spree.

Robert Salaam warned against jumping to conclusions about Maj Hasan’s motives and said there have only been two incidents of this kind in the past decade.

“Muslims have been in the US for several centuries and have contributed to American society in every single way. There are over 20,000 estimated active duty military… We’ve earned a right to serve in our country. We’re not vetting radical Christians – Timothy McVeigh was an army soldier and he blew up the Oklahoma federal building – crimes happen in America every few seconds and the country is majority Christian. We don’t call them Christian killings."

Sandra, I can not say I am 100% correct, but from the interviews I have seen one of the reasons seems the Army was afraid of being labeled politically incorrect. Many people brought up the fact that this man mentioned that he condoned terrorist attacks on multiple occasions, but the Army would just say an investigation is "pending" for fear of being labeled Islamaphobic. ----------------------------------------------------- Good news related to this. A student in Tehran asked the Ayatollah why no one is allowed to criticize him. On the national "Death to America Day" (the day when the country celebrates taking the American embassy workers hostage) instead of shouting "death to America" many youths were shouting "death to the dictator". If people continue to demand rights in the Middle East, and these countries become more democratic and secular, everyone will be better off. That will be the best solution to curb this intense hate that is promoted under these dictatorships. http://tinyurl.com/ykxyrdm

People need a full screening before ever allowed into the army period. I wonder why the warning signs of this man were ignored when he was showing signs of distress, openly showing anger and hostility towards being sent to afghanistan and the war period. All the warning signs were there and yet everyone ignored it.

Ban Muslim immigration. Islam is the enemy and needs to be treated accordingly.
rizal 10 November 2009 - 2:41am
just simple example, if you are just ordinary people and all of your family have been killed by American soldiers in Iraq or Afghanistan , i am asking you , what would you do???? doesn't it make you turn to be an extremist???? when you have no power , no guns , no nothing,, and you are alone , die is better than to be alive...that's what's going on in the Muslim worlds today.....
Steve 10 November 2009 - 3:23pm
Actually Iraq has the 4th highest guns per capita. So what about the Muslim hijackers from Saudi Arabia that flew planes full of people into buildings full of people BEFORE these two wars? What about the Muslim bombers in London that were born there? Madrid? What about the Indonesian bombers that have never been to Iraq or Afghanistan? The evidence suggests that regardless of what the West does radical imams will continue to preach anti-Western hate. If the people in the Muslim world never hold their religious leaders accountable then this hate will only continue to grow. Since I have not seen hardly any Muslims denouncing violence against innocent people, I can only conclude that there is no desire to make this hate stop.

I think we should put emotions aside and look at this logically. We certainly should not blame all Muslims and put them all under one umbrella...and there's no doubt that Christians can go berserk or commit terrorists acts as well. But that's not the point. If we deny the existence of the possibility that Muslims that may enter the armed forces or any other government organization may do so with ulterior motives..well, we are just being idiots not to scrutinize this concept and safe guard against it. It seems to me that US citizen or not...that this man was obviously carrying a lot of anti western baggage around for all to see. We should not have to chose one extreme or the other. We should be logical and sane and take precautions.

Hiram 8 November 2009 - 8:42pm
"just, one bad man"........From the evidence produced so far, this "one bad man" did it for his Islamic, religious belief. There are millions of bad men/women in this world who have murdered and will continue to murder in the name of Islam. I wonder how of the other bad men and women in this world publicly declare their murders like the Muslims do in their Islamic Jihad. Probably none or very few. He was a bad person and at this moment in time, it was a personal Jihad of his. {Islam and it's teachings are very dangerous to both Believers and non-Believers. Why doesn't the world see Muslims out in masses protesting the violence committed in the name of Islam? Is it because they support the murders of innocent people because the victims are non-Believers? Maybe, they are afraid of being ostracize by their Islamic community? { In closing, this one bad man is representation of the Islamic community at large. Why? Because those Muslims, who do not support the murders of innocent humans, do nothing positive to stop the murders. They don't care what the world thinks ( at this moment) and who their religious brethren murder!

Did you read the part in the article where the it says.....he didn't say if the Army has in place policies to protect muslims..........something to that effect. This is typical turn everything upside down rubbish that is going on everywhere in the west. Muslims commit some terrorist act in the name of their religion.......as always.......and all we worry about is the negative affects it might have on muslims.........and we seek to protect them from that.......so the logic is.......we have to protect the people that are shooting us and blowing us up...and vowing to destroy the west and infidels.........from the victims of their terror who might actually grow and brain one day and notice that muslims are an unacceptable threat and shouldn't be allowed to live outside of their Shariah shit holes. Yeah yeah........I know......some of them are born here and some of them are nationlised......who cares........Islam equals treason........it's that simple.....you can't believe in that religion without believing that it's your duty to try and impose Shariah and Islamic rule on the world.......that means you are a traitor to any country you live in that does not rule by Shariah law.

islam the religion of peices, body peices. please go into these sites and find out what muslims have in mind of the christains and jews and the the western civilization www.faithfreedom.org www.TheReligionOfPeace.com www.TheThirdJihad.com

As a Muslim, I would say, you should enlist in the army and then get as much information about army logistics and intelligence so you can report it to fellow Muslims in Afghanistan and Iraq. There is no way any Muslim can join the imperial forces and kill fellow Muslims. This man was silly and stupid all rolled in to one. As a General he would have had access to raw intelligence of support to his fellow Muslims. All he has done is made it difficult for other Muslims to join. If they do so now they might have to hide their faith. Brothers play heed.
Steve 9 November 2009 - 6:08pm
The fact that you are defending an ideology that kills countless innocent people voids your credibility. The fact that the 9/11 hijackers or the London or Madrid bombers committed mass murder is heinous enough. They did not have to look most of their victims in the eye (although they were near them). You are defending people that were able to murder many innocent unarmed people while looking them in the eye in India and Texas. They also kept hundreds of children hostage for days and ultimately mass murdered them as they begged for their lives. Anybody that thinks any God would justify these actions clearly insane.
Anonymous 8 November 2009 - 7:07pm
So you agree that we should not let muslims join the military. In fact it is in our best interest to kill you cowardly bastards whenever we can. In other words, the only good muslim is a dead muslim.
Anonymium 6 November 2009 - 5:33pm
"Muuuslimes haaave contriiibuated in every siiiiingle waaaaay, we earn RIGHTS, don´t blame us don´t blame us! Yadda yadda yadda!" Have you noticed it´s always the SAME garbage over and over again? Every single time some muzzie causes crime in western europe, we hearthe same pre-recorded excuses "Don´t blame the whole lot of them, many other comittes crime". Only problem, THEY cause the majority of crimes. Thought this doesn´t compare, at least not exactly. At least Major Nidal Malik Hasan wasn´t some lowlife criminal, mererly one individual who had the gutts to show hard opposition and acte on his beliefs, while cowards like robert salami degrades themself shamelessly by bleeping old and dull idiocies to cover their asses.

what about Timothy McVeigh. he was an army soldier and he blew up the Oklahoma federal building – crimes happen in America every few seconds and the country is majority Christian. We don’t call them Christian killings."and by the way i am hindu
Steve 9 November 2009 - 5:57pm
McVeigh did not specifically target people of different religions. In fact I am fairly certain that he knew most of the people in that building were Christian. I obviously do not think what he did was right, but we are facing a large problem right now. Keep ignoring the dangers that our societies face. This man viciously murdered people while screaming "Allahu Ackbar!" It seems like this has something in common with the people killed in a similar fashion in Mumbai, or the fact that that was the final thing little elementary students in Beslan heard before they were mowed down while running for their lives. It is what the mastermind behind the Bali bombing screamed as he was being put to executed, as well as what the 9/11 hijackers screamed as their plane was forced down over Pennsylvania by courageous passengers. But you're right, probably no connection, just typical Western paranoia.
Hiram 8 November 2009 - 5:05pm
"We don’t call them Christian killings."and by the way i am hindu".......Anonymous, Timothy McVeigh didn't bomb the federal building in OKC in the name of Christ. No where in the records of McVeigh did it reflect his belief in Christianity or any religion or he bombed the building for Yeshua. We don't call it a Christian killings because it was not done as a Jihad for Christ. Sorry to hear you are a Hindu.

That is so true. I look at it as another American losing his mind due to the high stress of everything going wrong in America the last 10 years of unnecessary wars, ecconomy etc. People forget that the human mind can only take so much before they crack. Just because the man is a psychiatrist, doesn´t mean he wasn´t under an incredible amount of stress and obviously needed help himself. The loose gun laws in America certainly don´t help the situation in the USA either. How many shooting sprees has the USA had so far this year and last year? It seems to be more in the news then not in the last two years of mass shootings, suicide murder combinations etc. It seems America needs to heal thy self before dictating to other countries how they should live their lives.
