The presidents of Iran, Afghanistan and Pakistan met in the Iranian capital today to discuss the fight against "extremism, terrorism and drugs".
During an international summit on Afghanistan which was held in The Hague in March, Afghanistan's President Hamid Karzai said the support of Iran and Pakistan was necessary for winning the war against extremist groups. Iran has repeatedly offered Afghanistan and Pakistan its support in the fight against militant groups. At today's summit, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmedinejad reiterated his country's offer of support.
Before the start of the summit, the United States military announced that international and Afghan forces had seized a total of 92 tonnes of poppy seeds, opium, morphine, heroin, hashish and other drugs during a four-day attack in Helmand province. Afghanistan is reported to account for 90 percent of the worldwide supply of heroin.
