Iran accuses the Dutch anti-Islam Freedom Party (PVV) of warmongering against Tehran. The accusation comes in response to remarks made by PVV MP Wim Kortenoeven who said an act of war against Iran was needed to prevent the destruction of the West.
"The warmongering, repugnant and racist positions adopted by the PVV increasingly serve to undermine the credibility of the Netherlands," according to a statement from the Iranian embassy.
"This approach will tarnish the image of the Netherlands in the eyes of sensible people throughout the world."
Mr Kortenoeven declined to explain precisely what he meant by his comments on Tuesday, but other MPs interpreted it as a call to bomb Iran. On Wednesday he denied this was the case and said he had never called for the bombing of Iran.
However, he did warn that the world could not wait till Iran possessed nuclear weapons. He gave this as the reason he would support any preventive action on the part of the United States or Israel against Iran "solely aimed at nuclear installations to prevent a war". Foreign Minister Uri Rosenthal commented that the bombing of Iran was not "under discussion".
The Iranian embassy response says that the PVV would be better advised to solve its problems with PVV MPs who have proved to have criminal convictions than be guilty of warmongering or making provocative statements.
The embassy statement ends with a warning:
"Iran is a peace-loving country which has never attacked another nation. Nevertheless, it would be totally stupid for others to even think about attacking Iran because, if that happened, the aggressor would face such a crushing answer as to regret its irresponsible behaviour for ever afterwards."
