The International Criminal Court in The Hague is to move to new premises in 2015. The Danish architect Bjarne Hammer presented his design for the new building on Monday.
The ICC's new accommodation will consist of several towers with a smaller rectangular building connecting them. It will house more than 1,200 new offices. In contrast to the barbed wires and tinted windows of the current headquarters, the new ICC building will have an open and transparent appearance.
“The International Criminal Court is a model for a free, open and just international community,” architect Bjarne Hammer told Dutch newsagency ANP, “The building should communicate these values.”
The 46,000 square-metre structure will cost approximately 92 million euros. The countries that signed the Rome Treaty, which provides the basis for the ICC, will jointly finance its construction.
