Indonesian army involved in illegal logging

Published on 29 January 2010 - 1:18pm
More about:

A study conducted by the University of Indonesia in Jakarta between 1999 and 2006 has revealed that the Indonesian army is involved in illegal logging in the border area with Malaysia. The army coordinates and facilitates the logging in the province of East Kalimantan. It also invests in it and acts as a negotiator.

The university report is all the more painful as the Indonesian government plans to enlist help from abroad in combating greenhouse gas emissions. Environmental experts say that deforestation contributes to climate change.
