Indonesian police say they might have killed the country's most wanted terrorist, Malaysian-born Noordin Top, during a gun battle with a number of suspects holed up in a house in central Java. DNA testing will be used to identify the remains.
Top is believed to have masterminded most of the country's terrorist attacks since 2002, including the 2005 Bali bombings and last month's attacks on two hotels in the capital Jakarta.
Police also raided a house in the capital Jakarta, killing two terrorists as they were about to detonate pipe bombs. Officers discovered a large cache of explosives and a small truck rigged to explode.
A police spokesperson said the terrorists were planning to attack President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono in Bogor, close to the capital. The president congratulated the police on their actions.
