A spokesperson for the environmental organisation Greenpeace says 14 of its activists were detained at an anti-deforestation protest in Riau province in Sumatra on Wednesday.
Greenpeace says five of the detainees are Indonesian and the others are from Australia, Canada, Germany and India. The activists scaled and chained themselves to a number of cranes used for exporting a pulp at Asia Pulp and Paper's port facilities in Riau. The activists hung up banners reading Forest destruction: You can stop this. The organisation says four activists are still on the cranes and will continue the protest for "as long as possible".
Asia Pulp and Paper is well known for its high greenhouse gas emissions and rampant deforestation in Indonesia has made the country the third largest emitter of greenhouse gases in the world.
