India tightens security due to hijack alert

Published on 22 January 2010 - 1:09pm
More about:

India has stepped up security at its airports in response to intelligence that extremists are planning to hijack Indian passenger planes. The threat has been linked to al-Qaeda or the Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba group.

Extra baggage controls are being carried out and air marshals are being deployed. The measures come in addition to heightened security measures put in place after the Mumbai bombings in 2008.

Only days ago, US Defence Secretary Robert Gates warned that terrorist groups were trying to start a new war between India and Pakistan.
