India and Pakistan have resumed talks on improving mutual relations. Pakistan's Foreign Affairs Undersecretary Salman Bashir met with his Indian colleague Nirupama Rao in the Indian capital of New Delhi. India broke off the peace process following the terrorist attacks in Mumbai in November 2008 which killed 166 people.
Since their independence in 1947, nuclear powers India and Pakistan have gone to war three times, in part over the border region Kashmir. Peace talks conducted from 2004 till 2008 did make some progress.
