Illegal logging costs Indonesia billions

Published on 1 December 2009 - 10:37am
More about:

Indonesia is missing out on 1.3 billion euros a year in tax revenue due to illegal logging. Human Rights Watch reports that over half of the logging that took place in Indonesia between 2003 and 2006 was illegal.

Indonesia is one of the biggest exporters of wood in the world, trading more wood than all the countries of Africa and Central America combined.

Human Rights Watch also highlights the widespread corruption in the logging sector and the implications for the environment. The organisation argues that deforestation is the main reason for Indonesia having the world's third highest level of greenhouse-gas emissions.
