Barcelona midfielder Ibrahim Afellay will be out of action for six months and possibly even longer after suffering a serious knee injury in training on Thursday.
The Dutch international, 25, tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee and will have surgery today.
Afellay had only just returned to the pitch after sustaining a hamstring injury in pre-season. As a result, he missed the two previous European Championship qualifying matches for the Dutch national team. He might just be fit again for next year’s finals in Ukraine and Poland.
