Hurricane Jimena, which is heading for the Mexican peninsula Baja California, has weakened to a category three hurricane. Nevertheless the authorities warn that it is still very dangerous and wind speeds could pick up once it makes landfall on Wednesday.
Tens of thousands of people have been evacuated, but many others are refusing to leave their homes. The authorities of the resort Los Cabos say they will forcibly evacuate people if necessary.
Many tourists are sitting out the hurricane in boarded up hotels. A state of emergency has been called in the towns of Los Cabos, La Paz and Comondú. The streets are flooded in many towns.
The last big hurricane to hit this region was over 50 years ago.
