Hurricane Jimena, which has made landfall on the Mexican peninsula Baja California, has weakened to a category one hurricane. The storm is passing through the scarcely-populated centre of the peninsula with winds of around 155 kilometres per hour.
Tens of thousands of people followed the advice of the authorities and left their homes, while many others remained. Thousands of tourists left resorts, while others sat out the storm in boarded-up hotels. The damage from the storm appears to be less than originally feared.
