Hurricane Ida has weakened in strength to a tropical depression above the United States. Ida made its first US landfall at Mobile, Alabama, but appears to have caused only minor flooding and minimal power cuts.
The storm had shut down almost 30 percent of Gulf of Mexico oil output on Monday, but energy experts predicted that by the end of Tuesday or early Wednesday, there would be normal operations across the Gulf production region.
The tail end of Ida coupled with a low pressure system in the Pacific caused heavy flooding earlier in El Salvador, claiming the lives of at least 135 people. Landslides and overflowing rivers carried away homes, while a raging torrent ripped through an entire section of the town of Tepetitan. Dozens of people are still missing and thousands are in need of relief aid.
