Hurricane Ida heads for US coast

Published on 9 November 2009 - 12:08pm
More about:

At least 102 people in El Salvador have been killed by hurricane Ida. The authorities believe there may be more victims as dozens of people are still missing in the eastern provinces.

Most of the victims were killed in landslides caused by the heavy rainfall.

Ida has now left the Yucatán peninsula. Popular coastal resorts such as Cancún have hardly been affected.

The hurricane has lost strength but is expected to pick up speed over the Gulf of Mexico.

The governor of the US state of Louisiana has called a state of emergency and the national guard has been deployed.

Ida is due to reach the US coast on Tuesday. Four years ago, New Orleans was badly hit by hurricane Katrina.
