Hurricane Ida batters Nicaragua islands

Hurricane Ida has caused considerable destruction on the Corn Islands off the coast of Nicaragua.

Thousands of houses were damaged and hundreds of people evacuated. Many towns experienced power cuts. There are no reports of injuries. Over mainland Nicaragua Ida weakened to a tropical storm. It is now crossing the Caribbean Sea. Metereologists say the coming days could see Ida gain strength before reaching Mexico.
