Huge crowds attend Havana concert

Published on 21 September 2009 - 8:08am
More about:

More than one million people have attended the Peace without Borders concert in downtown Havana.

The audience, which was twice as big as expected, listened to performances by 15, mostly Latin American artists. The initiative for the concert was taken by the extremely popular Colombian singer Juanes. He came in for fierce criticism from opponents of the Cuban regime who believed the event would legitimise the island's communist regime.

However, the organisers said the concert did not support any particular political movement, but aimed to promote peace and understanding between Cubans everywhere. Organiser Juanes said: "We are living in an absurd ideological war, we have to exchange hate for love".
