HRW: repression continues in Raúl's Cuba

Published on 18 November 2009 - 9:16pm
More about:

A report by Human Rights Watch (HRW) says that Raúl Castro has continued a system of repression and human rights abuses that his brother used to repress critics of the regime.

HRW says there has been little progress since Fidel Castro handed over to his younger brother Raúl. The new Castro regime still makes use of a Cuban law that allows the state to imprison people even before they commit a crime and dozens of dissidents who were imprisoned by Fidel are still behind bars.

The US-based human rights group says conditions in Cuba's jails are "inhumane". The organisation called on the international community to maintain pressure on the Cuban government.
