The Honduran parliament has decided against the reinstatement of Manuel Zelaya as president.
Mr Zelaya was ousted from power and deported five months ago. Since then Roberto Micheletti has led the de facto government. Since September, Manuel Zelaya has been hiding in the Brazilian embassy after secretly re-entering the country.
New presidential elections took place after huge international pressure. Part of the agreement entailed parliament deciding whether Mr Zelaya would be allowed to sit out his term of office, which is due to end in January. Many Latin American countries insist they will not restore ties with Honduras unless he is reinstated.
Manuel Zelaya, who has consistently questioned the legitimacy of the election, is disappointed by the decision.
Conservative politician Porfirio Lobo will be inaugurated as president on 27 January.
