More about:

Radio Netherlands Worldwide presents the Best Dutch Team of All Time. We have put together an unbeatable all-stars team that would easily win the World Cup. ?

For decades, Holland’s attractive, offensive football has enthralled people everywhere, relying on a seemingly endless host of world stars.

The number 11

11 series

On the eve of 2011, RNW presents a series on the number 11.

Oranje took the lead in the seventies, with a style carried out to perfection by luminaries such as Cruyff, Van Hanegem and Neeskens. One after another, waves of brilliant players have kept emerging since then.

In the late 1980s, Gullit, Van Basten and Rijkaard were the ones to enrapture connoisseurs around the world, followed by the De Boer twins and Bergkamp. At last year’s World Cup in South Africa, Wesley Sneijder and Arjen Robben stole the show.

Who, though, were the best of the past decades? Which team would a coach form if he could choose among all those generations?

Bas Teunissen (1971) and Gerhard Verduijn (1959) took up the challenge - only to realise how difficult a task they had set themselves. For each position, they could easily think of three, four, five more or less equally qualified candidates. The result is, of course, subjective and open to debate, as the clip below illustrates well.

We are pleased to invite you to join our debate. Do you agree or did we get it wrong? Would you choose a different goalie or striker? !

Alb 9 October 2011 - 6:39pm / Albania

Best formation:

Van Der Sar

De Boer Stam Krol(Neeskens)

Robben Sneider (Gullit) Cruyff

Van Basten

David Berridge 27 December 2010 - 1:08am / Canada

The real challenge to such a task is not just the naming of individuals to individual positions, but which combination of 11 players chosen freely from the constraints of the era played in, can come up to be the best possible winning formula ever. it could also turn out to be that lesser considered players such also be considered for solid, consistent efforts in supporting the higher rated superstars. The team concept must predominate here over a random mixture of individual talents.

Barcino 25 December 2010 - 6:17am / Colombie

Marco VanBansten is the best player ever but... Tanja neijeimer
is much better. Don't cry for my Argentina Super Champions ready
to win MEXICO 1986. NOW IS Comming to all of you BRAZIL 2014

drapoer 25 December 2010 - 3:41am / NL

what a shame Abe Lenstra is not in the team

Your choice might be the best, RNW. However, we haven't seen some of them play. So, I prefer this goalie Edwin van der Sar, Arjen Robben, Dirk Kuyt, and Sneijder...
