More about:

The Dutch national football team will start their 2014 World Cup qualifiers with a home match against Turkey, followed by an encounter in Hungary four days later. Holland’s qualifying campaign will also end against Turkey, in mid-October 2013.

The schedule was decided on Wednesday by draw after representatives from the six nations that make up Europe’s Qualification Group D failed to reach agreement on a full set of fixtures.

“I can live with the outcome of the draw,” Netherlands manager Bert van Marwijk commented, adding that “It’s a tough opening series with matches against Turkey, Hungary and Romania slated within a month and a half. It also means that after four fixtures, we’ll more or less know where we stand.”

The group winners will qualify directly for the 2014 FIFA World Cup. Among the nine group runners-up, the eight best runners-up will advance to the play-offs, where they will be drawn into four home-and-away ties to determine the other four qualifiers.

The 2014 FIFA World Cup will take place in Brazil from 12 June to 13 July 2014, with 12 cities hosting 64 matches.

In the wake of the opening ceremony, the first whistle will sound in the Arena de São Paulo and the final is scheduled in the Maracanã in Rio de Janeiro.
