Half of Dutch transport sector not eco-friendly

Published on 5 November 2009 - 1:15pm
More about:

Many Dutch road hauliers are neglecting the environment, according to figures published by business advisers PricewaterhouseCoopers.

Only half the transport firms are making an effort to increase the eco-friendliness of their vehicles.

With the others, sustainability appears to be bottom of the priority list. Few truckers are stimulated by their employers to use an economic driving style. Only a fifth of transport companies keep track of their environmental impact. Earlier research showed that the emission of greenhouse gases by Dutch transport companies has increased by 80 percent since 1990.

The researchers say companies are missing opportunities, because doing business in a sustainable way can actually lead to considerable cost reductions. PwC polled 50 road hauliers in the Netherlands for the survey.
