Haitians pay respects to Archbishop

Published on 24 January 2010 - 12:26am
More about:

Thousands of Haitians have paid their last respects to Archbishop Joseph Serge Miot and other victims of last week’s earthquake next to the ruins of the cathedral in Port-au-Prince.

The 63-year-old archbishop was very popular, he had been archbishop since 2008. President René Préval made a rare appearance to attend the funeral.

Queues have formed outside banks of people anxious to access funds send by relatives. The banks have not opened since the earthquake.

The banks have agreed not to allow people to take out more than 2500 dollars. Security guards will be on stand-by when the banks open.

The total number of bodies recovered is now 120,000, not counting bodies recovered by relatives.

On Friday, the government decided to end the rescue operation. Nevertheless, on Saturday a young man was dug out of the rubble and on Friday, a 22-year-old man and an 84-year-old woman were rescued.

The OCHA, the UN organisation coordinating the aid effort is now focussing on helping the survivors.
