Haitian PM dismissed

Published on 30 October 2009 - 11:48am
More about:

The Haitian senate has voted to dismiss Prime Minister Michéle Pierre-Louis.

A majority felt she had not done enough to revive the economy. Haiti is the poorest country of Latin America.
President René Préval is expected to appoint a successor soon. Senators of Mr Préval's party led the criticisms against Ms Pierre-Louis. They say she failed to effectively invest millions of euros intended for the reconstruction of buildings damaged in last year's hurricanes.

Michéle Pierre-Louis was the country's second woman prime minister. The island has a history of political instability and violence. More than 9,000 UN soldiers are stationed in Haiti, which has been relatively quiet in the past months.
