Haitian opposition rejects emergency law

Published on 20 April 2010 - 11:59am
More about:

The opposition in Haiti has rejected emergency legislation on the reconstruction of the country after January's devastating earthquake.

The opposition fears that the legislation will endanger Haitian sovereignty and hand over the reconstruction operation "to foreigners".

It also fears President Rene Préval may abuse his power. Last week, parliament voted in favour of the legislation.

As a result the state of emergency has been extended by one and a half years and an international committee will take over reconstruction.

The committee will be headed by Haitian Prime Minister Jean-Max Bellerive and former US President Bill Clinton.

Opposition leader Judy Roy has called on Haitians "to rebel" against the legislation.
