Work has begun to widen the beach at The Hague’s seaside resort Scheveningen.
A total of 2.6 million cubic metres of sand will be pumped via a pipeline from the seabed to extend the beach by between 40 and 70 metres. Beachgoers will have to make do with limited access to sand and sea this summer, and local people have been warned to beware of quicksand. The project is not due for completion till 2013 and will cost 75.5 million euros.
