Gunman runs amok in Dutch town

More about:

A lone gunman has killed six people and wounded at least ten others in the town of Alphen aan den Rijn in the west of the Netherlands.

The gunman, who was using an automatic weapon, slowly walked through the shopping centre, shooting all the while. He then committed suicide.

"There are at present six dead, including the person responsible," Bas Eenhoorn, the acting mayor of Alphen aan den Rijn, told a press conference. Later in the day, another victim died in hospital.

Four people were seriously wounded and at least seven less badly hurt, he said. Mayor Eenhoorn also said that there were children among the victims.

"A man with an automatic weapon opened fire on the crowd" in the Ridderhof centre, "which was packed with families and children doing their shopping," Eenhoorn said.

Shooter's identity
During a press conference, Public Prosecutor Kitty Nooy has announced that the perpetrator was a member of a shooting club who held a permit for five weapons, three of which were found on his body. However, its not yet clear whether these were the weapons he used in the shooting.

Eyewitnesses stated he used an automatic weapon, which he could not have obtained legally. The Public Prosecutor denied reports suggesting he had killed his mother and injured his father. She also denied rumours that he had a military background.

Police have confirmed that the perpetrator was 24-year-old Tristan van der Vlis, a local resident. He left a farewell note at his mother's home, but police say the note does not reveal a motive for the shooting. He left another note in his car saying he planted explosives at three other shopping malls. The authorities evacuated these malls as a precaution, and are searching for the explosives.

Tristan van der Vlis had come in contact with the police in 2003, in incidents involving possession of arms and making threats. Police questioned him at the time, but did not file any charges. Unconfirmed reports say he assaulted his girlfriend last month.

Panic
The shooting on a sunny weekend afternoon created mass panic in the mall, heightened by fears that more than one gunman was involved. Police who arrived on the scene evacuated the premises.

"It's hardly credible that our town could experience such slaughter, and on a day as beautiful as this," said Eenhoorn, adding that he was deeply shocked and offering his condolences to relatives of the victims.

Police evacuated the shopping centre and cordoned it off. They also evacuated three others as a precautionary measure. Nothing is known about the killer's motives.

Queen dismayed
Queen Beatrix said she heard the news with ‘great dismay’. The enormous sorrow so many people are going through right now has left her speechless, and she sympathizes intensely with the victims and their relatives. Princes Maxima also offered her condolences.

Prime Minister Mark Rutte also expressed his horror upon hearing news of the shooting. “Such a heinous deed is beyond anyone’s comprehension.” He expressed his sympathy for the victims.

Lone gunman
"I saw the shooter as he approached, and I went inside. I saw him firing the gun as he walked along," said the owner of a pet shop in the shopping centre. "He shot himself in the head." The pet shop owner said the shooting took place at a moment when the shopping centre was crowded with people. Panic broke out among the shoppers.

Local media spoke with witnesses. "He fired lots of rounds, and people panicked. He was standing by the cash register when he shot himself through the head. I kicked away his gun," said 34-year-old Ramon Vleerlaag.

Eighty-two-year-old Annemarie de Bruin was in the Albert Heijn supermarket when the shooter came in. "‘Run! That was the first thing I thought when I heard there was someone injured on the ground. I heard so many shots, it seemed like a cap gun. I left my groceries there and ran away."

A resident was sitting on her balcony when she saw the shooter come out of the shopping centre. "I heard what sounded like fireworks. I saw people running, some people fell, groceries were scattered. I saw a man in a bomber jacket and camouflage and a gun. He re-loaded, and then he went back in and I heard shooting again."

There was another shooting last week in Alphen aan den Rijn, in which two people were killed. Police say there is no connection between the two events.
