Guantanamo unlikely to close by January

Published on 26 September 2009 - 9:39am
More about:

Senior White House officials say it's likely that the US detention camp in Guantanamo Bay on Cuba will not be closed before January. Shortly after his inauguration, President Barack Obama promised to close Guantanamo by January 2010.

Speaking on condition of anonymity, the officials told news agency AP it's taking more time than expected to decide which prisoners can be released and which ones have to be transferred to prisons in the United States. The camp's closure is also being delayed, they added, by the fact that few countries are willing to take in detainees who can be released from prison.
