Guantánamo detainees arrive in Italy

Published on 1 December 2009 - 9:48am
More about:

Two Tunisian detainees from Guantánamo Bay have arrived in Italy, where they will be tried for recruiting Muslim extremists to fight in Afghanistan. The Italian government informed the United States in June that it was willing to accept a small number of Guantánamo detainees.

US President Barack Obama wants to close down the prison camp for terrorist suspects. At present it still houses 211 detainees. France has taken in one detainee from the controversial detention facility, an Algerian who was arrested in Bosnia in 2001.
