Groningen elects Labour mayor

Published on 16 June 2009 - 8:10am
More about:

Labour politician Peter Rehwinkel has been voted Groningen's new mayor by the northern city's council in a sitting on Monday evening.

Mr Rehwinkel is presently mayor of Naarden - a council in a well-to-do area of the province of North Holland - but was born in Groningen and studied law there.

The 44-year-old will succeed fellow Labour member Jacques Wallage, who has been mayor of Groningen since 1998. The city council had to choose their mayor from two candidates; the other candidate on the list has not been revealed.
