Statistics Netherlands reports that greenhouse gas emissions in the Netherlands were down last year for the fourth successive year.
Emissions were more than three percent below the level of 1990, the base year adopted in the Kyoto Protocol. The international climate agreements oblige the Netherlands to reduce its emissions from the 1990 level by an average of six percent during the period 2008-2012.
Last year's reduction was largely due to reduced emissions of nitrous oxide as a result of measures taken in the latter half of 2007 by manufacturers of nitric acid. This cut emissions by the equivalent of four billion kilograms of CO2.
