Greek firefighting plane crashes

Published on 27 August 2009 - 6:15pm
More about:

A firefighting plane has crashed in Greece while fighting a blaze on the Ionian island of Kefalonia. Greek authorities say the pilot, air force Colonel Stergios Kotoulas, died in the crash.

Greece has been battling wildfires, caused by drought, high temperatures and strong winds, for several weeks now.

Today's crash comes just a few days after firefighters finally managed to put out the fires threatening the capital Athens. More than 150 homes and thousands of hectares of forest and farmland were destroyed in the fires in the Athens' suburbs.
