Governor: terrorists using Aceh as base

Published on 12 March 2010 - 1:08pm
More about:

Terrorists aim to make the Indonesian province of Aceh their base for Southeast Asia, the province's governor Irwandi Yusuf told Radio Netherlands Worldwide.

In particular the militant organisation Jemaah Islamiyah is active in the predominantly Muslim province in the far north of Sumatra, says Mr Irwandi. The organisation seeks to establish a strictly Islamic state in Southeast Asia.

Mr Irwandi has been aware of the existence of a terrorist network in Aceh since last year. On 22 February, Indonesian police carried out a raid on a terrorist training camp in the jungle in Aceh. The governor stresses that this network has no links to the Free Aceh Movement (GAM), which made a peace agreement with the government in 2005.
