The Netherlands has had an exceptionally good weekend for sport, with medal winners in competitions at home and abroad.
In the World Judo Championships in Rotterdam, Marhinde Verkerk won a gold medal in the women's under-78 kilogram class. Olympic bronze medallist Henk Grol took silver in the men's under-100 kg despite suffering from a knee injury.
The Dutch men's hockey team beat Spain 6-1 to take the bronze at the European Championships in Amstelveen, a satellite town of Amsterdam. Earlier, the Dutch women won gold, becoming the European as well as World and Olympic hockey champions.
In Poznan, Poland, the Dutch won four medals in the World Rowing Championships. The men's eight, the women's eight and the lightweight men's eight all won bronze, while the women's four took gold.
Perhaps most impressive, though, was the performance at the European Jumping and Dressage Championships in Windsor, England, where the Dutch swept the board in the Grand Prix Freestyle Dressage. Edward Gal took the gold medal on Moorlands Totilas, smashing his previous world record with a score of 90.75%. Adeline Cornelissen took silver and the bronze went to Anky van Grunsven. Cornelissen and Gal had already won gold and silver respectively in the Grand Prix Special Dressage. The Dutch also won the team gold medal.
On the show jumping side, Albert Zoer and Okidoki won the bronze medal in the Individual Jumping and Harry Smolders took silver in the Grand Prix Competition.
