German beer consumption down again

Published on 27 July 2009 - 6:56pm
More about:

Germans continue to drink less and less beer. Experts estimate that beer consumption in Germany decreased by five percent in the first half of this year.

Michael Weiss, chairman of the German brewers' union, says this is the largest drop ever experienced by the industry. He does not expect beer consumption to rise again until 2012.

Among the factors blamed for the decrease are the smoking ban in hotels, bars and restaurants and the poor weather this summer.
