Friday 10 February RNW - NEWS AND ANALYSIS FROM THE NETHERLANDS IN 10 LANGUAGES, WORLDWIDE 24/7 ON RADIO, TV AND ONLINE

Geert Wilders to miss film starring himself

Published on 24 March 2010 - 4:07pm
More about:

Freedom Party leader Geert Wilders has announced he will not attend the opening night in Los Angeles of Islam Rising: Geert Wilders' Warning to the West because of alleged anti-gay comments made by one of the film's supporters.

The film, which is about Geert Wilders and his fight against Islam, was made by a US film production company and the right-wing Christian Action Network.

Mr Wilders says he will not attend the film's 1 May premiere because the Christian Action Network's founder Martin Mawyer was once quoted as saying that homosexuals were perverse and spread disease. Mr Mawyer denies having made the comments, but Geert Wilders says he does not know whom to believe.

The Christian Action Network is known for its militant stance against same-sex marriage. Although Mr Wilders does not agree with these views he previously said he did not mind it if they made a movie about him. Today he said he will not attend the premiere so as to avoid giving the impression that he agrees with the anti-gay comments allegedly made by the founder of the Christian Action Network. The opening night has now been cancelled.
