Geert Wilders master of political insult

Published on : 22 September 2011 - 1:40pm | By John Tyler (Photo: ANP)
More about:

Politicians are up in arms about Geert Wilders - again. This time they are reacting as much to the tone he used in the first major debate of the year as to his ideas.

"Beyond the limits of courtesy and decency", "inappropriate" and "unbecoming a member of the Dutch parliament" were some of the comments.

In an intiial reaction, Prime Minister Mark Rutte says he was totally annoyed. Not by Geert Wilders’ tone, but by the press coverage of what the populist anti-immigration politician said.

Lapdog
At the risk of further annoying the prime minister, here are some of the comments which are causing such consternation:

- After opposition D66 leader Alexander Pechtold finished asking a long-worded question, Mr Wilders said "I’ll try to react to Mr Pechtold’s diarrhoea."

- During the course of the day, Mr Wilders repeatedly referred to opposition Labour Party leader Job Cohen as the prime minister’s lapdog. At one point he said "Mr Cohen runs around the prime minister’s yard, yelping and peeing on a tree, but when the prime minister arrives he jumps up in his lap."

- Of the ten MPs from the Green Left, only five returned during vacation this summer for a special debate. Mr Wilders, proudly saying his entire caucus came back from holiday for that debate, said the Green Party MPs couldn't pull themselves away from the beach. He called them 'the beach party' for the rest of the afternoon.

Polite
Mr Wilders frequently used sarcasm in responding to questions, and his 24-person strong Freedom Party group just as frequently punctuated Mr Wilders’ insults with scornful laughter.

In fact, Mr Wilders took so much time taunting his opponents that he hardly had time to present a new proposal to ban the construction of minarets, with his requisite anti-Islam comments such as calling mosques 'hate palaces'.

Speaking on Dutch public radio, political analyst Kees Boonman said such language on the floor of parliament is only surprising because politics in the Netherlands is unusually polite. He said parliamentarians in many countries are used to an even harder tone in their debates.

These are the tactics of distraction, deflection and demonizing.

He characterize his "enemies", although they are really fellow citizens with whom he disagrees, in the most derogatory way. He shows his disrepect for them to his audience. Some people in the audience will buy-in his characterizations, other people recognize the vitriol as propaganda and off topic -- not addressing the issues the people have.

Wilders politics are fear and smear, they are not constructive.

I am proud of the how the media in Netherlands is reporting it.

Denise 30 December 2011 - 6:16am / USA

I love this website and I especially just love Geert Wilders! I have followed him for many years!! He is a patriot and I wish he would spend more time going after our Islam loving Radical Democrats in the US!! The Leftists will be the downfall of the world!

Roland33 1 October 2011 - 7:04pm

Take for example the lapdog outrage,PvdA politicians have been calling JP Balkenende a lapdog of George W Bush in the past.So they now think it's outrageous when it's directed at Cohen but felt it was fine to compare the Dutch prime minister to a lapdog in the past. There were no giant headlines saying how outrageous the language use was.It again shows how biased the Dutch media is in general towards the right in the Netherlands. This is the case in most countries it seems. Why the media is so left wing I don't know but it's a simple fact of life and most people have come to expect it and can read through it.

Roland33 1 October 2011 - 6:34pm

I think the whole discussion in the media about style (which Wilders has had forever and really shouldn't raise eyebrows) is really because the opposition didn't get anything done. The only weak spot of this minority government of VVD/CDA is the fact it relies on the support of Wilders PVV party to get it's measures through. So trying to emphasize the strong ideological differences between them, they try and get the government to collapse. The language used really wasn't anything new as the many examples given by Wilders about language use by other parties politicians in the past showed. It was selective outrage but for a real purpose.Especially sections of the CDA are sensitive about depending on the PVV but the majority know it's a purely business arrangement.

Why is there is much picking on his hair ? So he dyes it- big deal. Why is it alright for half the population of women to go blonde but when a man does that it's all wrong ? Besides, I see nothing wrong with his hairdo- the cut isn't bad at all , but his problem is that it's just too think and wavy. Think about all the famous men who wear their hair in an unconventioal style . Even Andre Rieu, the Dutch musician ,wears his hair long and wavy. People seem to love him- he draws as many as 4o thousand customers a show. And what about politician Oskar Freysinger of Switzerland ? He wears his hair in a ponytail . Admit it Geert is a person you just want to dislike- it wouldn't matter what kind of hair he has .

gsw 15 December 2011 - 4:13pm

If you look closely, you will see that he will not need to die it blond for much longer. The poor man is definitely going grey!
(Could it be from all those nice friendly death threats from the Religion of [RI] Peace?)

Oskar Freysinger of Switzerland is actually better looking.

Anonymous 27 September 2011 - 1:10pm / Andorra

That hair is an act of terrorism.

taproot2 27 September 2011 - 10:10am

I wish the Dutch would realize that they dislike Wilders for superficial reasons. I really believe they just don't like his style and maybe looks , with that "colorful" hair and all. I've heard his speeches and am quite impressed. He makes a lot of sense. Can you think of many other politicians who compared Islamism to Nazism ? No-they haven't got what it takes. But he's not wrong about that comparison. If people understood Islamism they would see it that way too. It's really no different that Nazism, Communism,Marxism, fascism, totalitarianism and so on. So what's so wrong with a poliician who's willing to fight these type of things ? I think Wilders is realistic . And thank him for keeping freedom of speech respected.

Anonymous 27 September 2011 - 2:35am / USA

Mr.Wilders is going to make more enemies when his party is going to pass the law the forbids foreigners to smoke cannabis. If that happens he will have a large entourage of bodyguards.

taproot2 26 September 2011 - 9:57am / usa

The Netherlands should lighten up, and quit being so negative about Wilders. (Admit it Dutch : you enjoy having someone to belittle, because it makes you feel bigger ) He can be pretty darned naughty and hair-raising ( I think it's actually fun ) , but he's not an appeaser ; I like the way he goes after the enemy, no matter what shape or form it's in. I'll admit he shouldn't insult other members of the senate, though- that's pushing the envelope too far . Europe is full of appeasers nowaday . Britain is pacifying, France accomidating, Belguim hypertolerant,Sweden , Norway likewise etc. and where has it got them ? All they have done is make Islamists square pegs feel like they will fit in a round hole . I say to the Dutch : be glad you have got a politician like Wilders HE'S not the enemy. If you are going to get mad at someone get mad at those ding-dongs in Supreme court who beat up on him for a year just for saying Islam sucks. That was one big insult to him . No wonder the guy is mad . Look at it this way : no matter what , the Netherlands is still better off with him than without him. He has an instinct to protect Holland.

Anonymous 26 September 2011 - 1:34am / NL

There was nothing wrong with either his 'tone' or his 'vocabulary'. It's all very tame compared to the British parliament backbenchers, for instance. He never swears (but PM Rutte DID say 'verdomme' during the same APB debate)and calling a political opponent such as Cohen a 'lapdog of the PM' is HARDLY shocking, is it now?
The Wilders-bashers very conveniently fail to mention that FAR more insulting language has been used in Dutch parliament in the past few years ('flapdrol', 'effe dimmen' etc.) Not to mention that Wilders himself has been labelled everything from 'fascist' to 'extremist' to 'racist'.
That did not appear to trigger feelings of 'indignation' from his 'esteemed colleagues' at all.
The media coverage about Wilders remains appallingly biased. Wilders at one point quoted what Samson (Labour) said about "Moroccans having an ethnic monopoly on causing trouble". Had WILDERS even said half of that himself, he would have been mauled by all of those present! Samson got away scot-free. This is typical of the hypocrisy and demonization that are still the main tactics of the press and the leftist block.

what i am so annoyed about is the simplification of this phenomenon
What islamification?
what is everybody trying to achieve? there is NO islamification.
This whole shit is a hoax like Mc Arther in the states with his communification.
Paranoid lunatic preaching.
the truth of the matter is that the overwhelming majority of Muslims are law biding citizens who pray more frequent then the average christian.
primitive people looking for primitive scapegoats.
Jews
Muslims
asylum seekers
stop this nonsense.

Hiram1 26 September 2011 - 1:21am

"What islamification?"....I guess if one is Muslim, then there isn't any "islamification". Inia is a perfect example of "islamification". It was split by "islamification". Go to France and watch how Muslims stop the traffic flow in the streets in order to pray. Go the UK and see how they treat their British guest. It is nonsense and it needs to be stopped before the entire world is "islamification" by primitive people who see nothing wrong with beating women like dogs because they wear jeans or don't cover their heads with sacks. If it is a loving and peaceful religion it surely doens't show it towards women.

‘Cohen is a fine one to talk. He’s the big facilitator.’ (Wilders)

‘Wilders is like a little child that doesn’t want to go to school.’ (PvdA leader Job Cohen).

‘Cohen is the cabinet resident poodle.’ (Wilders).

Thus is the real sad state of Dutch politics, observers from afar. As you see, it wouldn't be out of place in a schoolyard; an infant-school at that. If this is being a MASTER of political insult, I would really hate to see an amateur....

Iv never been into politics untill I started noticing the islamification of europe. So I done some research on the internet to see whats going on and what the politicians thought about this and damm its crazy what I saw on youtube and what I read, the islamification of europe is really going on right now but whats really messed up tho is that the politicians know this but are to scared and retarded to say anything unlike Mr. Wilders. I admire Geert and think he is a great man and will make a great leader. You might not agree with me but its freedom of speech baby. I would say everyone do abit of your own research because the media and other politicians are to politically correct to cover this type of stuff because it might offend people well islam I should say unlike Geert who saids it how it is and tells the truth and the truth is the only way foward. Peace

WHAT GOOD IS THAT THEY ARE ONLY WORDS AND THEREFORE ALL THE RIGHT TO EXPRESS, NOT BAD human contribution, another Dutchman UNLIKE THIS IS BIG, BIG IDEAS AND FACTS IN Christiaan Huygens SAID "THE WORLD IS MY COUNTRY, MY RELIGION SCIENCE "has been more than 300 YEARS OF THESE PHRASES Wonderland, but still persists Guys like Wilders, Bush, Aznar, Blair and countless HIGHLY SIMILAR HARMFUL FAUNA FOR HUMANITY, FOR LACK OF VISION DAILY SCIENTIFIC FACTS .

Pat 23 September 2011 - 10:28am / USA

Good for Geert ! Every government should have at least one politician like him. Someone who comes right out and SAYS IT like it really is. He has Holland and it's wellfare in mind, he does what he thinks should be done to benifit his own country even if it makes him unpopular. He's a man with backbone who doesn't want his country to bow down to a flood of freeloading, religious fanatics, and their thousand-year old Islamic architecture invading the Dutch skylines. The parliament should listen to him ; maybe then they will be moved to actually have a high-octane discussion and DO something for their country instead of worry about appeasing immigrants. You gotta give Wilders credit for having the kind of giblets those other insipid spineless sock puppets never have. Too much publicity is not the problem, btw- actually, he should get more of it so others may be influenced to fight for freedom rather than let Europe become a kettle of Islamic worms (try Eurobia ). Turn on the cameras and reporters- I think the world should get to know him and understand the need to turn the tide against Islamization.

ex-pet 23 September 2011 - 7:31am / laos

politics is about the ability to compromise.
its NOT a street fighting man/women 1 man show.
language used is rude and has NOTHING what so ever to do with Dutch culture.
We have enough trouble shaking our mercenaries/pirate past of our shoulders, we don't need people like this lunatic.
He is a derailed schoolboy who needed par-time school certificates to satisfy his personal disorder....he hates himself.
so be it.

Anonymous 23 September 2011 - 6:19am / Spain

Freedom of speech or lack of proposals? In any case, is really sad that anyone needs to speak like that about another people

Anonymous 22 September 2011 - 10:11pm

I am glad his is taking it on the the Dutch politicians. when he took it on the muslims. You guys said it was freedom of speech. Give the man a break. Go ahead Honorable Wilder. Say whatever you want my honorable leader. Freedom of speech has no limit. Well done my friend.

Anonymous 22 September 2011 - 7:40pm / UK

Incredible that this guy is in parliament... what it says about the Dutch!

Ela1 23 September 2011 - 5:58am / Alaska

Yes...imagine that.

A Dutch nationalist who actually cares about Dutch culture, in the Dutch parliament.

Yes, my Brit friend...that says a LOT about the Dutch.

It says that they actually care about the future of the Netherlands, as a Dutch country.

But quite conversely, your brief posts speaks many volumes about YOU...and what someone like YOU is doing in the UK at all is a question many more of us around the world have.

Awesome Ted 22 September 2011 - 9:14pm

Draw it mild. Last election, Wilders' PVV got only 12.5% of the popular vote. Netherlands doesn't use a Westminster parliamentary system like the UK so lots of special interest parties win seats in parliament. If the UK used a proportional representation system like NL, you'd probably have some white supremacist BNPers sitting in your House of Commons. Should that reflect on the UK as a whole? I don't think so.

Nigel 22 September 2011 - 4:47pm / Netherlands

Mr Wilders' primary motivation for the things he does and says is precisely to derive exactly the sort of publicity that your report here is giving him. It also probably explains the reason why such press coverage of Wilders' antics so annoys Mr Rutte!

Anonymous 22 September 2011 - 2:53pm

No dear, Wilders is a master of political insult, he's really rather poor at it; he far too predictable and repetitive and really quite tedious.

Anonymous 24 September 2011 - 8:30am / uk

That's only because what he says bears repeating, particularly in the face of denialist fools.
