Geert Wilders, loved and loathed

Published on : 11 December 2009 - 3:09pm | By John Tyler (RNW photo)
More about:

Dutch anti-Islam politician Geert Wilders has come in second in two polls for politician of the year. A panel of Dutch television viewers said he is the second best politician this year, while Mr Wilders' colleagues in parliament named him the second worst.

Quite a discrepancy. But, actually, not so surprising. It is yet more evidence of the gap between the public and the elite.

Next prime minister

Geert Wilders has made the disillusionment of many Dutch voters his reason for being. He is always ready to fight the establishment in the name of the little guy.

Part of the success of his Freedom Party movement comes from his style of speaking directly to the public. The simple, sometimes crude, language he uses on the floor of parliament has brought reprimands from his colleagues, and praise from his followers.

And it's his followers that have put Mr Wilders and his Freedom Party in a very strong position: second in European elections last spring, the largest party in the country for the last six months, according to one national opinion pollster. Mr Wilders himself openly speculates about becoming the next prime minister.

Anti-Islam ticket
Other political parties are having a tough time dealing with that scenario. The Freedom Party has been accused of having just one issue: anti-Islam. And it is precisely his fervent, if not radical, opposition to outward displays of Islam that brings condemnation from other politicians.

For instance, when Mr Wilders proposed a tax on women who wear a Muslim headscarf, calling it a 'rag-head tax', other politicians felt Mr Wilders had finally gone too far.

A blogger subtitled Geert Wilders' speech in parliament criticising the Dutch government's 2010 budget.

Gulf
Mr Wilders has been successful, but he doesn't owe his success solely to good political tactics. The gulf between the Dutch public and the élite has been wide, and growing, for years now. Voters are no longer faithful to one party; they no longer feel rooted in any particular ideology.

Academics and pollsters have been studying this gulf since the late 1990s. Pim Fortuyn was the first politician to appeal directly to these floating voters, but he was murdered just before elections in the spring of 2002. Since then, voters have been party hopping much more than in decades past, and the established parties have suffered.

Can be both
But whether or not Geert Wilders' popular success is due to his own talents, or to public disillusionment with the powers-that-be, in the end it is not so uncommon for politicians to be chosen best and worst in the same year.

The year-end polls ask people to choose both whom they think is best, and separately whom they think is worst. Both Prime Minister Jan Peter Balkenende and Finance Minister Wouter Bos have been in the top three and bottom three many times. It is a sign of recognition, a consequence of being outspoken and involved in the topics of the day. That triggers approval in some, rejection in others.

In that light, Mr Wilders can take solace. He did not come in second in all this years' polls. The very public who narrowly voted him second best politician of the year, also voted him as the outright winner for the worst politician of the year.

Of course, the only poll that counts is the ballot box. National elections must take place within the next 17 months - then we will see just how large the gap is between the public and the élite.

It seems as if Dutch people are like pigeons, they coo and coo, but really do little else. It is not entirely their fault, they have been lied to and mislead by a small group of elitist , almost unbelievably arrogant people, who have been in power in Holland since about the 1840's. They despise and detest ordinary Dutch people, with a vengeance. People like Geert Wilders are just opportunistic right wing politicians . His actual political platform is just plain old economic rationalism , he is a one trick pony , in that he taps into an issue about foreigners who smell funny and are inherently obnoxious, but is response is weak in the extreme. The Dutch left-wing parties are socialist in name only, their agenda has long ago been hijacked ,by various interest groups such as feminists, gays and the more articulate Muslims. None dare mention the elephant in the room , because to mention race ,is to invite the wrath of the Jew controlled media , and the rather tedious and largely unproven allusions to the Holocaust , Hitler and Auschwitz. Wilders is a blind alley a Jew sponsored Judas goat, the only real answer ,even if it is not an easy one to come to terms with ,is national socialism , and this can only be achieved when not just the Dutch ,but the entire white race ,( what's left of it after 60 years of Zionist attempts to wipe them out )learns to recognize its real enemy. Arabs, Turks , Blacks are like acne, annoying but hardly fatal, kill a couple of thousand and they'll run off, Jews are like cancer , getting rid of them is much ,much harder, but not impossible, but Dutch people just coo, and get all weepy about Anne Frank. ironically anyone who ever spent more than 5 minutes with Otto Frank , would a become a instant anti Semite and realize the whole story is largely made up nonsense.I sometimes doubt if the white race has lost the plot entirely ,when they actually listen to rap, perhaps a fitting funeral dirge to a once proud people.

Dear Commentsdesk;
Historically, Islamic countries have usually charged a religion tax for non-Islamic religions to practice their faithmodes within the borders of such Mohamedan-oriented sovereign nation states. Christian and Hebrew religions have paid a permission to practice religion tax in Islamic operated territories for centuries. Now, of course, many Islamostates strictly ban any non-Islamic religiosophy from openly existing within their jurisdictions and would undoubtedly do the same should the dystopian fear of "Eurabia" be allowed to come to pass. Gerts "headscarf tax" idea is simply a tit for tat game, "They hate us so we hate them back." Islamites tax Holland and all white countries by getting in front of the welfare line for the best subsidised housing, cars, college, medicine and politically payola make-work sit on bottom in some silly nonessential office jobs paid for by hard working Europeans, North Americans, Australians and New Zealanders. Dump them all on Kadaafi and let him house, feed, medicate and educate them. Or ship them all to Somalia where there is no country and they an start a new one..Or perhaps to Kommunist China where they can make slave labor shoddy products to be sold at Walmart the Trojan Horse of the Chinese Communist Party. Yes, support free Holland and do it now!!!!!

Prime Minister is leader of one country, Geert is leader of Humanity.
For me he is more than any Prime or Crime Minister.
I am from Bharat (India), I admire him.

Good on Geert Wilders for speaking out about a disease that is spreading world wide. Many European countries are in deep trouble because they were hoodwinked with political correctness and freedom of religion. Well, Islam is a facist political ideal born of a misogynist Warlord who gathered support by claiming to be a messenger from God. He tortured, raped, pillaged and plundered, enslaved murdered and forcibly converted victims to Islam. They are still trying to do it, but they've sneaked in the back door and are slowly but surely taking over, because your governments are too weak and gutless to take action against them.

Anonymous 4 March 2010 - 8:40pm

Geert Wilders cannot be a racist he is only anti-Islamist. Islam is not a race, it is not a religion, it is a form of totalitarianism much like Communism. The Dutch as well as we Americans are not going to be ruled by a small clique of Fabian faux elitist cowards. We will defend our Western Cukture of Individual freedom and Ruke of Law.

Anonymous 3 September 2010 - 12:17pm / Netherlands

You do that. We should do that. We should not allow the evil ideology of Islam to dominate this land, otherwise it will murder everything and turn Europe into Afghanistan and Pakistan. Destruction is their ultimate motive.

Anonymous 10 June 2010 - 10:47pm

i agree with u thats why even though iam a migrant . I voted for Geert.

Nona 22 February 2010 - 3:36pm

Muslims want to subjugate the West. They abuse the notion of multiculturalism to hijack society. Has anyone heard a muslim condemn the attempted destruction of a US bound passenger plan on Christmas day? And why should unemployable burqa-clad women be allowed to collect the dole either?

Anonymous 10 June 2010 - 10:51pm

Nona, that is what i always say if muslims are peacefull, god-fearing and god-loving people why donot they condem the terrorist attacks. I was in karachi pakistan when twin towers were attacked and guess what people were celebrating and distributing sweets.

Hiram1 22 February 2010 - 3:52pm / USA

Nona, you are right. When the twin towers were destroyed and thousands of lives were lost, the Palistians celebrated at the deaths. Those same people today are receiving millions of dollars of American money and part of it is being paid by the families who lost love ones in the Islamic act of terrorism. It was done in the name of Islamic Jihad. Nona, I don't think any European nation made a statement of condemnation of the incident of which you spoke. Why? Because they have a big thirst for oil and guess where it comes from....Islamic nations. They will sell their souls for a cup 10w40 oil from Iran!

I have heard many reasons why people have swung to Wilders to vote. Wilders-Pvv, To many Dutch citizens, fell they are the only partij who would listen to the people´s wants and needs in this country, not raising retirement age for the AOW Wilders was against. CDA and PVDA promised to not raise retirement age and they did exactly the opposite making it difficult for people to trust the government at all anymore. The high taxes, the non working government etc. VVD is too much for their own self interest and for the rich only so most know where that partij always stood. Many politicians are guilty of playing the anti immigration card in order to score voter points, even PVDA is guilty of swinging to the far right and making up false figures in immigration family reunification, claiming it was out of control when it fact it is the opposite. CDA and PVDA made the mistake of turning on all IMMIGRANTS including Western immigrants outside of EU which not only helped the ecconomy by working and paying taxes but, many immigrants who have lived here for years from all religious backgrounds became the target of the media propaganda and hate, and now both Western immigrants outside of Eu and middle eastern immigrants who became citizens of this country are backing each other up and turned against pvda and cda because of their propoganda lies. Some of these immigrants are married to Dutch citizens and have been insulted and harrassed by the gemeentes all over Holland and people find this not only outrageous, but cruel and confusing with the forever changing inburgering courses, even if many of these people are integrated and speak dutch fluently, they are forced to do a insulting inburgering course because they are not born in an Eu member state, this law was approved by pvda and CDA, NOT PVV. Wilders wanted the law for those who are non Western that have no western knowledge and cannot speak the language at all and do not have a job to integrate, but he wanted this law for eastern Europeans as well. What has shocked many citizens with a foreign partner is the unfair and openly discriminatory law that exempts EU citizens with their third country partners, also non eu Norwegians and Swiss with their third country partners, are not obligated to do the inburgering even if they speak not a word in dutch and lived here for years. EU citizens have more rights then Dutch citizens, dutch citizens without immigrant backgrounds are discriminated against as well. So all Dutch citizens and Dutch citizens with a foreign background, who are married to non Eu citizens have turned on PVDA, CDA and VVD and are voting for Wilders and PVV in protest. Wilders has openly said from day one that he is against middle eastern immigration and Islamic influence on the West which we must admit, this blame on anti islam fears started from legitimate reasons for the West to be fearful to changes in the way Islam is interpreted by those who want to practice their religion in peace and those who want to abuse their religion in order to cause harm to other human beings. Wilders genuinely believes certain parts of the Koran are dangerous, which we do not have to agree with him but he is after all entitled to his own opinion. What made voters run to Wilders is, the Copy cat politicial partijs trying to copy Wilders thinking they can steal Wilders votes based on anti immigration rhetroic. This only infuriated voters and exposed the true nature of those partijs for their own self interest, and not the interest of the Dutch citizens which has only backfired and lead more voters to Wilders partij of PVV. Wilders has also much support from the Jewish communities in the Netherlands, Europe, USA. and now Israel´s far right support Wilders. PVDA is a socialist partij, which socialist have a bad reputation for their anti jewish background during and before world war 2. PVDA is the classic example of socialists turning on those who voted for them in power, now they are anti immigration and are violating the rights of Dutch citizens to marry outside of ÈU when it was this partij who pretended to back these very people. CDA and PVDA are guilty of spreading hate. Instead of trying to counter anti islam, anti immigration and anti semitic hate, they only encouraged it by trying to play who can be the harshest politician with peoples lives, abusing their power with laws to suite their own seflish wants rather then follow international human rights laws. I don´t always agree with Wilders on his total misconception Islam, but I do not think he is deliberately trying to spread hate in order to gain votes. I believe he geniuniely believes all of Islam is dangerous and it is up to PVV and some intelligent Muslims to sit down and talk one day and give one another facts and not accusations. Israel and the Palestine need to work out their problems too and make peace without the world sticking their noses in their business, making it worse. As far as Wilders being a racists goes, that is a bunch of bull. He is obnoxious at times and can get carried away, but he is not racist. Wilders has from day one pointed that out, has minority supports as well. Wilders needs to get to know Muslims in the United States, and learn that not all Muslims are terrorists. If you treat people as second class citizens like here in Europe, then you should know that people will not be accepting of the Western way but turn to the extreme if their backs are turned to the wall.
Anonymous 12 December 2009 - 6:24pm / Lalaland.
Wilders should distinguish and discern that there are also Muslims who despise and hate the extreme Islamists who bomb, maim and destroy innocent people;thus one cannot condemn all Muslims for the acts of a group of extremists who create havoc and devastation in the world.
SmoggieBoon 18 June 2010 - 4:36pm / UK

Where are these so called "moderate" muslims when atrocities are being perpetrated. . . Where is the loud condemnation of extreme islam. . . the silence is as usual, deafening. Islam is an ideology of subjugation, and I for one do not believe that this moderate muslim majority even exists. If you believe that the writings of the quran are the unerrant word of allah, then to be a moderate muslim is denying this. Sorry, but "moderate muslim" is the biggest oxymoron I have ever heard. I have a couple of muslim friends who are as moderate as I have seen, and on the surface they seem to be fairly anti-extremist, but start and engage in any meaningful conversation about their ideology and they find it more and more difficult to hide the true agenda of Islam.

simon jones 12 December 2009 - 4:48pm / uk
Why do muslims think Europe owes them anything, at the last count there were 56 muslim countries in the world so muslims in europe can you please move to either, Iran, saudi arabia, morocco, turkey or anyone of the other 52. Europeans need to wake up each muslim family has 8 children each european family has 2. Every 10 years the muslim population doubles, they are parasites that live of welfare and are changing the face of our cities, they are not wanted here. They hate everything we stand for and have a propensity for violence, terrorisim and backwardness. Geert wilders is the sort of politician that europe needs, in goverment to repatriate the muslims out of europe for our sanity and theres they need to go or be forced out, by gun point if thats what it takes.
Hiram 12 December 2009 - 5:45pm / USA
"...by gun point if thats what it takes."......The problems are: 1. You, the British, are the ones that let them immigrate into the Isles. If, you don't want anymore Muslims, stop allowing them to immigrate into the UK. 2. You, the British, via your elected officials, don't want to hold them accountable when they, the Muslims, protest and riot on British streets but at the same time supress the BNP party when they speak-up about the abuses committed by Muslims. 3. You, the British, via your elected officials, allow the Muslims special treatment over non-immigrants (whites) in jobs, housing, and schools. 4. Your statement "by gun point if thats what it takes" is a joke because you, the original, British citizens, who put yourselves into this quagmire of religious ideologies, allowed your elected officials over the 100 years, to slowly take away your civil liberties and one such right was: "The right to own guns". Do you know why they took your right to own guns away from you? They know you can not stand-up to them when they, the British government, takes away all your rights. Just as you gave away your rights, you gave away the British Isles, to EU. Personally, the British public, put themselves into precarious situation. It's hard to have empathy for people who put their heads in a hole and expect the Muslims not take advantage of such a weak minded people. { Islam does not believe in equality of religions. Look at India. India at one time consisted of Pakistan, Bangladash (East Pakistan), and other areas. As they grew in population they used their strength of population to break-away from India. They have already taken control of the British Isles. Or, should we say "Englandstan!"
SmoggieBoon 18 June 2010 - 4:45pm / UK

I am afraid that Hiram is to a large extent correct. We in the UK have let the politicians slowly erode all of our civil liberties till we are toothless to stop any Islamisation. Winston Churchill made an impassioned speech on the creeping power of Islam, and was ignored for 100 years. Enoch Powell made his infamous "rivers of blood" speech 50 years ago and was villified by his peers. Even now the majority of voters are totally apathetic to what is going on around them. They either don't see whats happening, or even worse, they don't care. . .

Abed 12 December 2009 - 1:59pm / Lebanon
As a Muslim, I honestly think that it is time for all Muslims who are willing to live in Europe to INTEGRATE. Integration and reconcilliation with Islam is not impossible. Wilders is just riding a wild card, and playing on the scapegoat tactic! It really is saddening to see that no one has learned anything from History!
Anonymous 12 December 2009 - 6:26am / U.S.A.
Wilders is a true Conservative. His economic platform is similar to what Margaret Thatcher's was and Daniel Hannan is today. Wilders is also a strong proponent of free speech and debate as opposed to politically correct censorship of the left. Wilders is indeed anti-Shariah law in Europe. For good reason. Shariah law and those who practice it are misogynists. Shariah law is also anti-gay and in fact anti everything that isn't from the 6th and 7th century teachings of Muhammad.
Badger 12 December 2009 - 3:38am / USA
The US is under a lot of pressure internally. We are under the same assault as you are from the Middle East. Be careful as we may not have the extra capacity to save both the US and Europe from the radicals when the events finally arrive. Be mindful that your Islamic immigrants were unwilling to fight for their freedom in their homeland, thus they immigrated to yours. Do you really think that they will fight for your country when the time arrives? The world is full of evil people and they will not negotiate their beliefs. Do you hate your culture so much as to give it up? What if your parents had done the same to you?
David Berridge 12 December 2009 - 3:01am / Canada
With the elasticity in the electorate in recent years, Geert cannot claim the same ironclad loyalties any more than the other parties can. If indeed Geert is standing up for the provebial "little guy" than what is he using as a support base? At a moment's notice Geert's fortunes can ride for a fall as anyone else.
FeFe 11 December 2009 - 10:27pm / USA
If you are truly Dutch, why must you put 'muslim' behind it and ask what has been given to you lately?
Hiram 11 December 2009 - 11:24pm / USA
".......why must you put 'muslim' behind it and ask what has been given to you lately?" Why? Because the article stated he was for the little guy. I was trying to point out that are numerous other little guys in the Netherlands but he only cares about the ones who wear clogs or for anyone except for immigrants like Muslims. I used Muslims because the only thing he wants for the Muslims is deportation and taxation for wearing headscarves. They are little guys too but he doesn't care for all little guys. It was sarcasm and nothing else. Sorry, if you are a Muslim and you misunderstood me, my apologies.
Anonymous 12 December 2009 - 6:31am / U.S.A.
Wilders support Muslim immigrants as long as they are willing to live by the laws and assimilate into a Western democratic country. He is opposed to all immigrants to violate the law, don't work and live off of the public dole whatever country they are from or religion that they practice.
Hiram 11 December 2009 - 10:04pm / USA
"Geert Wilders has made the disillusionment of many Dutch voters his reason for being. He is always ready to fight the establishment in the name of the little guy."........Yeah, which little guys are you talking about? The ones who wear wooden clogs or the ones who wear headscarves? Sure, he is for the little guy and his name is Geert Wilders? What has he done, besides threaten Muslim women for wearing scarves, for the little guys in the Netherlands? All we hear are negative attributes about him but what are some of the positive attributes? Can any little guys(Muslims) name any positive things he has done for the Dutch Muslims? I know you can name the negative things but can you give us a few positive things. Nope, I didn't think so!
