British Prime Minister George Brown has told South African President Jacob Zuma that Britain is opposed to lifting the EU sanctions on Zimbabwe.
President Zuma is in London for a three-day visit.
He appealed to Mr Brown to end the sanctions but the prime minister says it is still too soon. Great Britain first wants to see President Robert Mugabe's government of national unity show progress in human rights and democracy.
The South African president's visit has given the British tabloids a chance to publish lurid stories about his turbulent private life.
President Zuma has three wives and has been criticised recently for becoming a father for the 20th time, this time as a result of an extra-marital affair. The mother is an official of the South African World Cup football organisation
