Gazprom looking to buy Dutch soccer team

Published on 31 October 2009 - 11:59am
More about:

Dutch newpaper De Telegraaf reports that Russian energy company Gazprom is interested in buying the Dutch football team AZ. Apparently Gazprom is looking to pick up AZ shares and is also interested in buying the stadium in Alkmaar.

League champions in 2008/09, AZ have been without a sponsor since the recent collapse of the DSB Bank. Gazprom previously played an important role at the Russian club Zenit St Petersburg and is currently shirt sponsor of German football club Schalke 04. The German team receives 25 million euros a season.

DSB's Dirk Scheringa invested 100 million euros in AZ, but it's not known how much the Russian energy giant can expect to pay for the team.
