Lady Gaga is slithering into new realms of performance art. In follow-up to her appearance in last year's flesh frock – made up of pieces of meat – slime attire from the Netherlands is the sartorial selection for 2011. The garb is the creation of a 27-year-old Eindhoven artist. Bart Hess specialises in manufacturing slime of all sorts and colours, which he then smears over people.
'Gaga loves it'
Lady Gaga, 25, asked Mr Hess to make a costume for her after seeing his work in the American edition of Vogue fashion magazine. 'Gaga loves it, let's do it,' is how a spokesman for the singer described the decision.
To achieve the right slime colour and texture, the artist mixed materials from supermarkets, do-it-yourself outlets and toy shops. He then shipped it from his Eindhoven attic to New York, where Gaga was ultimately slathered in 15 kilos of the gunge.
International fame
The slime sensation can be seen in the booklet accompanying Lady Gaga's 'Born this Way' CD. Photos also appear on a blog of Lady Gaga's stylist.
Mr Hess has previously worked for the Dutch fashion designer Iris van Herpen. He has exhibited in Milan, London and Paris. A number of his slime designs can be seen in the slide show.
