Fresh violence breaks out in Nigeria

Published on 17 March 2010 - 1:27pm
More about:

Fresh violence between Christians and Muslims has broken out near the city of Jos in Nigeria. At least 11 people have been killed.

Nigerian state radio reports that Muslims entered Riyom, a Christian village, 30 kilometres south of Jos, during the night. The attackers were probably herdsmen dressed in military uniforms.

Ten days ago Muslims attacked three other Christian villages in the same area, killing more than 400 people.

In January, hundreds of others were killed in attacks in Jos. It is thought that the latest killings could be revenge attacks for the killing of Muslims in January.

The city lies on the dividing line between the Christian south and the Islamic north of Nigeria and is regularly the scene of violence between Christians and Muslims.
